The upside is that even without using the masks, skins, and other professional features, you can create and edit both images and photographs with a little practice. This program is a bit complicated to use to it's fullest capablities, but that's because this is something professional graphic artists could use. This version also has some great photo editing tools which earlier versions of Paint Shop did not have. The Paint Shop Pro by Jasc allows the user to create, edit, even animate, original images for web, print, publishing, etc. I was happy to find this software on Amazon. I don't need to create graphics often enough to justify the cost of the expensive image creation software available today. The Jasc company was purchased by Corel years ago and Corel changed Paint Shop Pro to a program more designed for photo editing than image creation. I have been using Paint Shop Pro for years and my old CD had finally died. JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 AE will not disappoint. If you want a program that is powerful, has a learning curve that beginners can get a grip on and has a wide user base offering tons of support (check Usenet and Google!) and is *almost* as powerful as the 500 dollar PhotoShop, grab it now. If you want a program that is kindergarten-easy, this isn't is. Need to touch up photos? With a little practice, you will be doing pro-level work. Need filters? It's likely in there and if it isn't, there are tons of after-market filters that will work. Need support for pressure sensitive graphics tablets? It's in there. It *can be* easy to use once you invest a few hours in learning the interface but it can also be capable of the most complex operations on your graphics (requiring multiple steps) to the point that it can nearly replace the (7X more expensive) PhotoShop.

PSP 7, like PSP 5 and 6 before it, is more like a poor man's Adobe Photoshop. Why? The price implies "Hold your hand, beginners will love it, easy to use simplicity" but the program itself is not quite that way. Paint Shop Pro is a hard graphics program to rate.
